Chapter 3, 9, and 10 Reflection by Claudia Vega

This class project was such a great experience in my opinion. Due to the current situation with the Coronavirus, I thought working in groups was going to be a hassle because sometimes in groups, some people slack off and don’t put in their part of the work but with my group, I couldn’t be happier with everyone’s cooperation and ability to have everything on time and very presentable. My group and I decided it would be best if we divide the work by sections and we would help each other out if we had any doubts. Regardless of the situation, it was such a great experience because we all texted back through a group chat we made in WhatsApp and we were all able to communicate and get along. Because of remote learning, getting to know your classmates on a more personal level sounded like something impossible at the beginning of the semester. Now, I feel like we can all rely on each other and communicate without being shy.

My favorite part about this project was the experience and getting to collaborate with my group of my classmates on one project. My project was on the third chapter of the book we were assigned in the class. In this chapter, there were many interesting topics discussed. Some of the most informative topics for me were Dominant cultures, co-cultures, cultural identity, religion, Socioeconomic status, disability, individualism/ collectivism, Chronemics, low and high context cultures and developing intercultural communication competence. These topics were the most interesting to me because these are the topics that I can relate to the most in my life. Growing up in Miami, it is a very diverse city and there are many races and cultures. Many people who reside in the same neighborhood are from completely different parts of the world and this sometimes creates a barrier between people and this is why there is so much miscommunication between people. This chapter is something so important because since we all attend Miami Dade College, we all reside in South Florida and it is something everyone in the class can relate to.

When listening to group 2’s presentation, I enjoyed it more than I thought because I was looking forward to hearing about other chapters since I had so much fun creating my presentation. Group 2 presented about chapter ethics, health groups, metal health, and conflicts with miscommunication. In this presentation, one thing someone said really called my attention and it was when they were explaining about mental health and support groups. Recently one of my family members went through something traumatic and she had to attend a mental health group and she explained to me how helpful it was to talk to people who understood what she was going through. I think mental health is a bit underrated, especially in the fast-paced country we live in. There is a lot of stress in our lives and sometimes we just have to unwind and vent to someone about our situations.

In conclusion, working my group was very fun and it was a unique experience. Despite the circumstances of remote learning, this was surprisingly easy.
