disability project reflection.

For our latest group presentation we were given a topic that is often avoided in conversation although it shouldn't be. The topic of disabilities should be something that is spoken about more to raise awareness about them. Many people are misinformed or not informed at all when it comes to disabilities, which leads to other problems. In this group presentation we were given three broad categories of disabilities that would be split into sub-categories that a single person would work on. We all would later come together and combine all the information about our sub-categories to make a presentation about multiple disabilities through different perspectives.

The topics were split between mobility disabilities, brain disabilities, and spinal cord disabilities. These topics would be then related to the subject of the material given in our books; covering chapters 7-14 all in three mass power points. It was a fun way of covering the material necessary in the book while relating it to a topic that is not spoken about often although it is interesting. Me and my group were assigned the topic of spinal cord disabilities. We spoke about several types of spinal cord disabilities and just the importance of the spinal cord in general. The spinal cord is such an important part of the body just injuring one part of it can have an effect on possibly the entire body.

Among those that became disabled due to their spinal cord there are paraplegics and quadriplegics. There are also those who become completely disabled from a specific part of the spinal cord and below, which are called complete spinal injury where no sensation is felt below the site of injury. And there are incomplete spinal cord injuries where some sensation does exist below the site of injury even if it is just barely any sensation at all. I am glad to have been given this topic for the disability project as I can personally relate with the topic. My late grandfather had became paraplegic after fighting in the Vietnam war and he would always ask for my help when he needed.

Learning about the disability that put my grandfather in the position he was in was truly eye-opening for me, and taught me new things that I could never have learned before. I truly am grateful to have been given the privilege of bringing awareness to such an important topic that should be given more attention, or at least people should know more information about it to be able to empathize with those that may experiencing it.

Looking back, in the beginning I was a bit hesitant on where to begin with the mass of information readily available to me. But thanks to my group, I quickly cleared up the confusion and knew exactly how to go about my presentation. I never felt lost along the way and I knew I was not alone in the presentation. Working in groups is comforting and makes the workload much more bearable knowing if I stumble along the way I don't have to be shy to ask my group mates. I'm thankful to have been given the opportunity to make this presentation.

Disability Presentation Reflection by Abel Aguilera

After our first effective introduction about presentation we needed to make a second one about disabilities. We were separated into indistinguishable three gatherings from previously and everyone was allocated with various handicaps. Gathering one needed to discuss versatility and physical debilitation, spinal rope, and cerebrum disability. Gathering two needed to discuss vision, hearing, and subjective or learning inabilities. At long last gathering three needed to discuss mental disarranges and undetectable inabilities. The primary objective of this task was to make an introduction that later could be utilized by Miami Dade College to praise the Disability Awareness Month. We were given fourteen days to expand a force point introduction, a handout, a plan, an investigation direct and a banner on the handicaps doled out.

I was in a similar gathering as in the past, bunch one. The gathering had eleven individuals, so we chose to separate the incapacities between us. Our pioneer, Camila Pena, appointed every one of us a task so we would assemble everything and toward the end, present. We chose to do voiceovers for our introduction which helped us a ton. Likewise, the vast majority of the gathering individuals talked with somebody with the incapacity they were appointed to, to clarify somewhat better how an individual with these conditions may feel. Our introduction came out great, notwithstanding, we had a ton of bothers. A portion of the gathering individuals never realized what they needed to do and didn't answer their telephones. We figured out how to put all the Power Points together and caused the introduction to occur. We utilized a great deal of pictures and clarified everything in a basic manner. Something I would have enjoyed more is somewhat a greater amount of duty and request from part of my gathering yet that is it.

Group 2 discussed vision, hearing and intellectual or learning incapacities, an exceptionally intriguing and normal subject. Their introduction was great, they didn't include a ton of data and pictures to their slides. They related their handicaps to the all the parts and left everything clear. They likewise talked with individuals that had any of the handicaps and quickly clarified how they managed it. Like our gathering, I figure everything would have been exceptional with somewhat more association, however it is justifiable since everything that is going on this moment.

Group 3 introduced about mental issue and imperceptible incapacities; exceptionally regular conditions present in our lives. The introduction was great generally, they clarified how the incapacity identified with their parts and how hard is having one of these inabilities. The meeting comprehended the sections and how they are identified with the handicap. The Power Point introduction contained a decent number of pictures, so the slides were not to overpowering. I figure they did a great activity.

In general, I feel like we worked admirably, we had the option to see all the parts and how having handicap could an influence the manner in which you speak with others. In my life, I have met many individuals with various inabilities, and I have consistently had the option to frame a connection with them. I trust that Miami Dade College can utilize any of our data in the Disability Awareness Month to instruct others about how others carry on with their life and their encounters.

Presentation Reflection

When it came to do the presentation of doing disability it was interesting. I always thought disabilities being a very touchy subject to talk about. My grandfather had multiple sclerosis, so I had someone in my family who had a disability. With doing this presentation it is good to see how people are spreading awareness of disabilities. The presentations spread awareness of disability and  shows the community how they can help. We chose the these themes for our presentation so that we show how society treats and how they show acceptance of people with disabilities.
The presentation for my team came out excellent. Our subject on our PowerPoint was spinal cord disability. Spinal cord disability is a very serious and can be a very serious if someone ever gets injured on their spine it can be very serious even making them paralyzed if injured severely or even left in a vegetative state or being brain damaged. After this that person has to be taken care of by either loved ones or by medical care workers. In our presentation we wanted to go over what it is like for someone for someone who has a spinal cord disability.
With the our PowerPoint it was difficult do to with my part because of how my chapter did not go with the topic of spinal cord disability. The way it is that when it comes to having a spinal cord disability it is super difficult for a person to talk or communicate with others if they have been injured. Spinal cord injuries have a lot to deal with the brain and chest area so if someone who is injured in a car accident can make a person develop problems with speech.
My grandfather after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis went from being witnessed from my mother and uncle is that he had problems starting to  talk. He would have problems were it became hard for him to talk due the injury. After he would be tired after saying just a couple of words and he would breathe heavily. A lot of other people who I have heard from who have spinal cord injuries or know someone who has spinal cord injuries all had problems breathing.
Hopefully we will be able to all come together in our community and help others who have a spinal cord injury because their life is harder than ours and it is good to help those who are in need of us.

Disabilities is such a broad term where people have so many misconceptions due to the excessive amount of information that there is floating around. When you ask someone, what is a disability, their minds automatically go to people with physical disabilities and this is something that needs to change. My group was working with Spinal Cord, Mobility and Impairment and Brain Disability. These disabilities were great to work hand in hand in because they were very flexible in terms of being able to find information to compare and contrast them to. There was so much information about these that it is impossible to get misinformed because so many well know doctors have dedicated their lives to finding new technology to make the lives of people with disabilities easier. In my opinion, doing this project was very eye-opening and not just to learn new things about each disability but I took a step further and did research on how people lived with a disability, what their lives looked like when doing things we might take for granted like grabbing a set of keys and going on a drive, or going to the beach, or even just walking down the stairs to grab a bottle of water. This project helped me see everything from a different perspective and I really liked that about this class. This project helped me share my newly acquired knowledge with my classmates and I think they enjoyed it as much as I did. This project was a bit more hectic than the last one just because the order of the PowerPoints were harder to arrange. Something I felt that could have been better was that is we were all just were able to correctly use Microsoft PowerPoint because it became very hectic at times with the audio recording. Other than some technical difficulties and some minor miscommunication, everything seemed fine.

Disease Presentation Summary

We had to do a presentation on Mobility and Physical impairments and we divided the work with four other classmates in our group and It went extremely well.  My section for the theme presentation was on treatments dealing with mobility and physical impairments. It was an eye opening experience getting to understand how these diseases are treated. While doing my extensive research on how these diseases are treated, I can come to the conclusion that there are many affordable and diverse options out there for people that need them. These are some of the treatments that are used for certain diseases involving maneuverability.
Cerebral palsy treatments include occupational & physical therapy as well as medications such as muscle relaxants and sedatives. Spina Bifida is treated by surgeries such as spinal, colostomy & spinal fusions. People with Spina Bifida can also use devices such as back braces and walkers. Muscular dystrophy treatments include physical therapy, steroid medication, and wheelchairs and walkers. Multiple Sclerosis or MS is treated with physical therapy, acupuncture and counseling as well as medications such as anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drugs.
The other groups spoke on spinal cord disabilities and brain disabilities. The presentations were well performed and gave an insight on how these diseases function and their solutions. These diseases may cause many problems with victims trying to connect with others through communication. They also have treatments that are very efficient and needed throughout their respective communities.
These diseases offer a wide array of problems that could interfere with communication. The connection involving communication could be the issues that come with stereotyping or the disease may impact their ability to fully express themselves. These obstacles may hinder their ability converse with others but we must understand this if we truly wish to learn from this course and become well seasoned veterans in the art of communication.
There are organizations that raise awareness and money for further research within these diseases. The organizations hold special events within the community to bring the people together and bring much needed attention to these diseases. They provide funds for treatment and even provide valuable resources to those who are in dire need of it. These organizations are vital for spreading information and raising awareness. Anybody can do a quick Google search and learn about how these organizations function and how they help those in need.
I believe that these presentations have provided valuable insight, especially to those who have family members or know people who have been directly affected by these diseases to combat them and to be more informed. Some of the students were kind enough to share some heartbreaking stories and experiences regarding these diseases and I truly believe this project has helped absolutely everybody involved. It was extremely refreshing to write about such a significant topic, especially in a speech class were we must use our communication skills to display a presentation to the audience about an important topic such as this. This was an assignment that was very valuable and I appreciate that I was able to be a part of it.

Presentation of disabilities

The presentation of disabilities was a challenge, I set out to develop the following theme: how society reacts to disabilities. It was very complex as I couldn't find any information to corroborate my words. In the end I managed to finish the project and be very happy with the result even though I could not get the maximum rating. I chose that topic because I thought it would be something different and that it would give people the opportunity to better understand the history and behavior of us as a society. The only thing that went wrong is that I had in mind to add an interview to my presentation, but the person refused at the last moment and I was unable to present the interview, otherwise I think the presentation was very good.

The presentation of the team in general was very good, we had many things to do and very little information about it, but we knew how to organize and divided the tasks in such a way that the presentation was very fluid and fruitful. We had some complications at first as it was a lot to do and several people on the team couldn't follow the thread. But the excellent role of our group leader allowed us to organize everything well and make things go according to plan.

The other presentations were very interesting, I learned a lot with them each of the groups bringing super valuable information I have interesting. One of the ones that struck me the most was an interview conducted by team number 2. The other teams also defended their themes and developed them very well. I am sure that it was a challenge for everyone to make this presentation as there is a lot of information about it and sometimes it is overwhelming and it is very difficult to synthesize.

I feel with a lot of pressure as I do work and during the presentation. This was due to two reasons, the first is that the teacher informed us by giving us the assignment that our presentations were to be used in the future by other people as a reference and the other reason was that one of the people who was listening to us present suffered from a disability so she had to be very responsible when making the presentation and providing real, useful information and that under no circumstances offended someone. At the end of the presentation I felt good feelings as I think everything went well and I was able to convey the message I wanted in a perfect way that I think and I hope it was so

the bad news is that I take a bittersweet taste from this presentation as my rating was not as expected even though I tried a lot to make sure that everything was fine. Although I am sure that the teacher I rate as fairly as possible and if she did not give me the note I expected is because some mistakes I must have made undoubtedly, mistakes that I intend to fix in future presentations and I hope that I can exceed my limits

Disabilities Presentation Reflection

Following our previous presentation, which was about communication, we were given our second presentation, which was about disabilities. We stayed in the same three groups that we were in for the first presentation. The professor gave us two weeks to prepare a presentation, a study guide, an agenda, a brochure, and a poster. The purpose of this presentation was so that it can be used by Miami Dade College for Disability Awareness month. Group 1 was in charge of talking about mobility and physical impairment, spinal cord, and brain disabilities. Group 2 talked about vision, hearing, cognitive or learning disabilities. Then group 3 talked about psychological disorders and invisible disabilities.

For this project, I was in the same group as the previous presentation, which was group 1. In total, the group had eleven people. There were 3 main topics and 8 chapters: 7-11 was Mobility and Physical impairments, 12-13 was Spinal cord, and chapter 14 was Brain. The topic I ended up choosing was mobility and physical impairments. The chapter I chose to do my presentation on was chapter 9, which was communicating in groups. At first, I was a little lost because I was not sure what to do, but I got help from my classmates. Everything was put together last minute, so gathering information and completing the assignment felt rushed. First thing I did was complete the study guide. I read my chapter and I took it from there; I included important definitions and facts that I thought were essential to know. After that, I went on to do my research for my presentation. I had to do my research on the symptoms of mobility and physical impairment disabilities. On my power point, I listed the symptoms of mobility and physical impairments and included a chart of the symptoms as a visual. At the end of my presentation, I explained how having a mobility or physical impairment disability can affect one's ability to communicate in groups.

Group 2 had to do their presentation on vision, hearing and cognitive or learning disabilities. I believe that they're presentation was good and presentable. They had sufficient information but they could've had more visuals. The group made sure to relate the disabilities to their chapters, which was good. They also interviewed individuals with these disabilities. The presentation was good overall.

Group 3 talked about psychological disorders and invisible disabilities. I think that this type of disability is very common amongst society. I am very familiar with psychological disorders and invisible disabilities because I know people that suffer from it. The group did a great job explaining how this disability affects a lot of people. This group also did an interview and with an individual. The power point provided a lot of good information and some visuals.

I feel like all the groups did a great job. With everything that is going on and classes being online, everyone is making the best of it.
