To start out the presentations we began with group 1, which was my group. We were in charge of presenting chapter 3. Chapter 3 was about intercultural communication and talks about the different factors that affect communication such as: culture, sex, gender, religion, disabilities, values and much more. I think it was a privilege to be assigned with this chapter because of how diverse Miami is as a city, learning about different cultures and factors that affect communication can help us better communicate amongst different people and environments. Among all the topics discussed my favorite were, dominant and co-cultures, ethnicity, religion, and disabilities. I felt these topics really helped me better understand how communication is affected by these factors which is important.
Group 2 was assigned with presenting chapter 9 which was ironically was about communicating in groups. They talked about what it means to communicate in certain groups and the manner in which they do so. Their topics consisted of families, social groups, support groups, interest groups, virtual groups, healthy groups, and more. Among their topics discussed my favorite were families, support groups, virtual groups, and healthy groups. I feel like during the current times and what we are currently experiencing these groups are a major factor to being and staying happy and I felt it necessary that we talk about it.
Group 3 was assigned with the topic of leadership and what it means to be a leader. They discussed traits that all good leaders should have, and the difference between management and leadership which is important to recognize as a leader. They mentioned how leaders should behave in groups and how to communicate effectively as a leader in groups. I think this chapter was important because of how a leader affects not only one person but possible hundreds of people varying on the type of leader that he/she may be.
After working in groups I can proudly say I am glad to have done so. Working in groups made the workload a lot more bare-able but also enjoyable. I was never lost along the way and I knew I could ask my group mates if I struggled with anything. Between each topic the method of delivery for information is different which keeps the presentation interesting. We each showed something about ourselves in each of our topics then brought it together to explain a central idea which was quite the gratifying experience.
