Disease Presentation Summary

          We had to do a presentation on Mobility and Physical impairments and we divided the work with four other classmates in our group and It went extremely well.  My section for the theme presentation was on treatments dealing with mobility and physical impairments. It was an eye opening experience getting to understand how these diseases are treated. While doing my extensive research on how these diseases are treated, I can come to the conclusion that there are many affordable and diverse options out there for people that need them. These are some of the treatments that are used for certain diseases involving maneuverability.

          Cerebral palsy treatments include occupational & physical therapy as well as medications such as muscle relaxants and sedatives. Spina Bifida is treated by surgeries such as spinal, colostomy & spinal fusions. People with Spina Bifida can also use devices such as back braces and walkers. Muscular dystrophy treatments include physical therapy, steroid medication, and wheelchairs and walkers. Multiple Sclerosis or MS is treated with physical therapy, acupuncture and counseling as well as medications such as anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drugs.

          The other groups spoke on spinal cord disabilities and brain disabilities. The presentations were well performed and gave an insight on how these diseases function and their solutions. These diseases may cause many problems with victims trying to connect with others through communication. They also have treatments that are very efficient and needed throughout their respective communities.

         These diseases offer a wide array of problems that could interfere with communication. The connection involving communication could be the issues that come with stereotyping or the disease may impact their ability to fully express themselves. These obstacles may hinder their ability converse with others but we must understand this if we truly wish to learn from this course and become well seasoned veterans in the art of communication.

        There are organizations that raise awareness and money for further research within these diseases. The organizations hold special events within the community to bring the people together and bring much needed attention to these diseases. They provide funds for treatment and even provide valuable resources to those who are in dire need of it. These organizations are vital for spreading information and raising awareness. Anybody can do a quick Google search and learn about how these organizations function and how they help those in need.

          I believe that these presentations have provided valuable insight, especially to those who have family members or know people who have been directly affected by these diseases to combat them and to be more informed. Some of the students were kind enough to share some heartbreaking stories and experiences regarding these diseases and I truly believe this project has helped absolutely everybody involved. It was extremely refreshing to write about such a significant topic, especially in a speech class were we must use our communication skills to display a presentation to the audience about an important topic such as this. This was an assignment that was very valuable and I appreciate that I was able to be a part of it.

Presentation of disabilities

The presentation of disabilities was a challenge, I set out to develop the following theme: how society reacts to disabilities. It was very complex as I couldn't find any information to corroborate my words. In the end I managed to finish the project and be very happy with the result even though I could not get the maximum rating. I chose that topic because I thought it would be something different and that it would give people the opportunity to better understand the history and behavior of us as a society. The only thing that went wrong is that I had in mind to add an interview to my presentation, but the person refused at the last moment and I was unable to present the interview, otherwise I think the presentation was very good.

              The presentation of the team in general was very good, we had many things to do and very little information about it, but we knew how to organize and divided the tasks in such a way that the presentation was very fluid and fruitful. We had some complications at first as it was a lot to do and several people on the team couldn't follow the thread. But the excellent role of our group leader allowed us to organize everything well and make things go according to plan.

              The other presentations were very interesting, I learned a lot with them each of the groups bringing super valuable information I have interesting. One of the ones that struck me the most was an interview conducted by team number 2. The other teams also defended their themes and developed them very well. I am sure that it was a challenge for everyone to make this presentation as there is a lot of information about it and sometimes it is overwhelming and it is very difficult to synthesize.

I feel with a lot of pressure as I do work and during the presentation. This was due to two reasons, the first is that the teacher informed us by giving us the assignment that our presentations were to be used in the future by other people as a reference and the other reason was that one of the people who was listening to us present suffered from a disability so she had to be very responsible when making the presentation and providing real, useful information and that under no circumstances offended someone. At the end of the presentation I felt good feelings as I think everything went well and I was able to convey the message I wanted in a perfect way that I think and I hope it was so

the bad news is that I take a bittersweet taste from this presentation as my rating was not as expected even though I tried a lot to make sure that everything was fine. Although I am sure that the teacher I rate as fairly as possible and if she did not give me the note I expected is because some mistakes I must have made undoubtedly, mistakes that I intend to fix in future presentations and I hope that I can exceed my limits

Disabilities Presentation Reflection

       Following our previous presentation, which was about communication, we were given our second presentation, which was about disabilities. We stayed in the same three groups that we were in for the first presentation. The professor gave us two weeks to prepare a presentation, a study guide, an agenda, a brochure, and a poster. The purpose of this presentation was so that it can be used by Miami Dade College for Disability Awareness month. Group 1 was in charge of talking about mobility and physical impairment, spinal cord, and brain disabilities. Group 2 talked about vision, hearing, cognitive or learning disabilities. Then group 3 talked about psychological disorders and invisible disabilities. 

        

       For this project, I was in the same group as the previous presentation, which was group 1. In total, the group had eleven people. There were 3 main topics and 8 chapters: 7-11 was Mobility and Physical impairments, 12-13 was Spinal cord, and chapter 14 was Brain. The topic I ended up choosing was mobility and physical impairments. The chapter I chose to do my presentation on was chapter 9, which was communicating in groups. At first, I was a little lost because I was not sure what to do, but I got help from my classmates. Everything was put together last minute, so gathering information and completing the assignment felt rushed. First thing I did was complete the study guide. I read my chapter and I took it from there; I included important definitions and facts that I thought were essential to know. After that, I went on to do my research for my presentation. I had to do my research on the symptoms of mobility and physical impairment disabilities. On my power point, I listed the symptoms of mobility and physical impairments and included a chart of the symptoms as a visual. At the end of my presentation, I explained how having a mobility or physical impairment disability can affect one's ability to communicate in groups. 

        Group 2 had to do their presentation on vision, hearing and cognitive or learning disabilities. I believe that they're presentation was good and presentable. They had sufficient information but they could've had more visuals. The group made sure to relate the disabilities to their chapters, which was good. They also interviewed individuals with these disabilities. The presentation was good overall. 

        Group 3 talked about psychological disorders and invisible disabilities. I think that this type of disability is very common amongst society. I am very familiar with psychological disorders and invisible disabilities because I know people that suffer from it. The group did a great job explaining how this disability affects a lot of people. This group also did an interview and with an individual. The power point provided a lot of good information and some visuals. 

       I feel like all the groups did a great job. With everything that is going on and classes being online, everyone is making the best of it.

        

Disability Presentation Reflection by Diego Nunez

After our first successful presentation about communication we had to make a second one about disabilities. We were divided into the same three groups as before and each one was assigned with different disabilities. Group one had to talk about mobility and physical impairment, spinal cord, and brain disabilities. Group two had to talk about vision, hearing, and cognitive or learning disabilities. Finally group three had to talk about psychological disorders and invisible disabilities. The main goal of this project was to create a presentation that later could be used by Miami Dade College for the purpose of celebrating the Disability Awareness Month. We were given two weeks to elaborate a power point presentation, a brochure, an agenda, a study guide and a poster on the disabilities assigned.

          I was in the same group as before, group one. The group had eleven people, so we decided to divide the disabilities between us. Our leader, Camila Pena, assigned each of us an assignment so we would put everything together and at the end, present. We decided to do voiceovers for our presentation which helped us a lot. Also, most of the group members interviewed someone with the disability they were assigned to, to explain a bit better how a person with these conditions might feel. Our presentation came out really good, however, we had a lot of inconveniences. Some of the group members never knew what they had to do and did not answer their phones. We managed to put all the Power Points together and made the presentation happen. We used a lot of pictures and explained everything in a simple way. Something I would have liked more is a little bit more of responsibility and order from part of my group but that is it.

Group 2 talked about vision, hearing and cognitive or learning disabilities, a very interesting and common topic. Their presentation was really good, they did not add a lot of information and images to their slides. They related their disabilities to the all the chapters and left everything clear. They also interviewed people that had any of the disabilities and briefly explained how they dealt with it. Like our group, I think everything would have been better with a little more organization, but it is understandable since everything that is happening right now. 

Group 3 presented about psychological disorders and invisible disabilities; very common conditions present in our lives. The presentation was really good overall, they explained how the disability related to their chapters and how hard is having one of these disabilities. The interview helped understand the chapters and how they are related to the disability. The Power Point presentation contained a good number of images, so the slides were not to overwhelming. I think they did a really good job. 

Overall, I feel like we did a good job, we were able to understand all the chapters and how having disability could a affect the way you communicate with others. In my life, I have met a lot of people with different disabilities and I have always been able to form a relation with them. I hope that Miami Dade College can use any of our information in the Disability Awareness Month to educate others about how others live their life and their experiences.  

 

Disability Presentation Reflection by Camila Pena

After our previous presentation, we were assigned to work again as a group in order to prepare a great presentation about a very controversial topic that most people tend to avoid talking about: disabilities. Our goal was to create an amazing presentation and materials about this topic, that could later be used in our incredible educational institution, which is Miami Dade College, for the purpose of celebrating the Disability Awareness Month. We were given two weeks to work on it, to prepare a PowerPoint presentation, a poster, a brochure, study guides, and an agenda. Together, as a group, we worked together during those long two weeks, splitting up information and workload, helping each other with the purpose of finishing in time, but also to achieve greatness.

As the group leader, I had many things and work to do. Besides completing my part of the work that was assigned to me, I had to watch over my group team members, help them if they need my help and answer any doubt they had. Fortunately, even though I lack many qualities that a leader requires to have, I was able to help them and together as a group we created a wonderful presentation about the disabilities that we assigned to us: Mobility and physical impairment, spinal cord disabilities, and brain disabilities.

Also, in order to cover all of these disabilities and being able to finish in time, our group was divided into three subgroups, which one of them took care of one disability and each member worked on their own part, according to their disability and group. My group members were Claudia and Adrian and our disability was brain disabilities, which I had a little bit of previous knowledge of, even if I did not know about that until I did my research on them.

How did I know about brain disabilities, you wonder? Well, my grandmother, the woman who raised me, suffers from a brain disorder called Parkinson disease. Parkinson disease is a degenerative disease that, over time, paralyzes parts of your body and causes constant shaking. My grandmother, after she had a stroke, was not able to move her right side very well and after a while, she lost all movement on that side. Unfortunately, everything went downhill, because her body starting to shake lightly. Very lightly, but just in a few months, her right arm, jaw, and right leg were unable to stop shaking at all.

After I researched about brain disabilities and their causes, which are the destruction of brain cells caused by brain disorders, I understood that my grandmother has a brain disability, even when my family and I still do not see it like that. To me, disabilities are just obstacles, but that does not mean that people with disabilities are not capable of doing the Same things we do, in fact, they are. They are, certainly, very capable and I admire them for that, especially my grandmother, one the strongest women I have ever met.

Reflections for chapters 3,9, and 10

Reflections on presentations

      This is my first online class that I have had to take online because of the corona-virus and I am eager to successfully pass this class with the ongoing challenges. On our first week of Speech class, we were asked to make power point presentations based off of the chapters our groups were assigned. Seeing as this is a Speech class, we also had to present our PowerPoint to the rest of our classmates. It was an eye opening experience in the sense that even though the presentations were done online and over a computer screen, it still felt as if you were presenting to the class in person. I am extremely excited to learn more about effectively communicating because it is a necessary skill to have in life.

           The first group that presented was ours and I believe we did a very good job. We had to communicate with each other through WhatsApp prior to the presentation in order to make sure everything was running smoothly. All our group members did their extensive research on their piece and it showed throughout their presentation that we truly understood the concept that we were explaining. My piece was on “Competent Communication Strategies”. Now with everything being said I do believe we could have done better in our constant use of the word “like”. I did this a lot in my presentation and I believe it would benefit me to write down my words before speaking them so that I can sound more professional and not stall so much with using words such as “like” and the occasional mumbling.

          The second group based their presentation on the topic of “Communicating in Groups”. They spoke about the appropriate etiquette that is required when speaking to groups of people or even family. We learned about the possible cohesion we could obtain by learning how to effectively communicate in groups. They spoke of many different ways to speak to support groups, social groups, interest groups and even virtual groups. Their presentation was handled exceptionally well with how they explained their topics more in depth. This chapter is very important because we communicate in groups often. For example, this presentation had to be set up in groups meaning there had to have been effectively communicating in groups. 

         The final presentation was based on “Group Leadership and Problem Solving”. They elaborated the importance of being a leader within a group and being able to lead a group in the right direction. A leader within a group must have the proper skills to help resolve conflicts, keep discussions on track and to make sure each member of the group is accountable for their work. They also touched on being able to hold effective meetings and their importance to accomplish goals. Their presentation was fantastic as well as the others. They were the last group to present so they presented very well.

These presentations have certainly been very informative and they have taught me very valuable tips on communicating effectively. I’m excited to learn more from this course.

Chapter 3, 9, and 10 by Daniel Diaz

    The year of 2020 has been a tragic year so far. Beginning with in the United States and Iran supposedly going to war and the corona-virus becoming more and more of a problem as it took over the world by storm, forcing everyone in quarantine. We thought the 2020 would get better but things have gotten worst. But with online class starting soon, I personally thought it was going to be hard but ever since has started, I was wrong. My classmates and my professor are making the online class so interesting. The presentation was an interesting with group 1, my group, doing our presentation on Chapter 3: Intercultural Communication, group 2 doing Chapter 9:Communicating in Groups, and last group 3 doing Chapter 10:Group Leadership and Problem Solving.

     

 

     Group 1 presentation was based on Intercultural Communication. Culture is seen as a way of  life. The chapter also goes over how different cultures are communicate between one another. Communication can be seen as an important in communication because it is the way we as humans talk to one another or how we express our own cultures. Take for example the United States. We are seen as a multicultural society due to early settlers that came from all over the world to settle in this land and the native american's who have lived in the United States in for centuries or even millennia's. The multicultural groups in the United States are shown to have many different ways we communicate between one another.

   

 

    Group 2 had discussed about in Chapter 9: Communicating in Groups. Communication is very important in groups and how we are set up in social groups such as families or communities. Social groups are a number of persons two or more, who have some common objects of attention, who are stimulating to each other, who have common loyalty and participate in similar activities. We see examples of these social groups in our everyday life such as our friends and family and how we communicate between each other with laughter or argument. We communicate with different social groups set up new groups and communication between one another to setup new boundaries.         

 

    The final presentation was group 3, Chapter 10:Group Leadership and Problem Solving. Leaderships is the action of leading a group of people to achieve a common goal. Usually we see leaderships of all kind all around the world. Leader's are individuals who are willing to lead a community or even society in achieving a goal that they have in common with a group or society. They lead the way and take on challenges and the hardship so that they their group does not have to endorse it. Sometimes if a problem is too much for them to handle the community comes together to help each other out one way or another of some sort.

     

    In conclusion, the presentation have really opened up my views point on how we tackle challenges in our society and how we all come together to form a solution. These presentations have taught me a lot from on how we work as a community.
